mk3 gti

hi i have a mk3 gti and have 2 problems.

1) when i start the car it turns over but doesnt start but then the 2nd time i turn over it starts fine and drives.
every time it only starts on the 2nd attempt. could this be a problem with fuel??

2)when it idles sometimes it goes between around 700 and 1000, the rev needle keeps moving like its struggling.

apart from that it drives fine.

does anybody know what these problems could be?
